Packaging

What is your packaging made from?

Refill Pouches: 100% compostable kraft paper and bioplastics (PLA)
Spice Tins: A minimum of 65% recycled tinplate and metals
Labels: Recycled paper
Mailers: Cardboard

How is your packaging sustainable?

We are focused on making the right choice easier. That's why we choose sustainable packaging that is compostable or recyclable, and always plastic-free.
Delivering our spices refills in 100% compostable pouches is a simple idea to reduce waste and lower CO2 emissions. Our tins weigh 60% less than a glass bottle you find on supermarket shelves so fewer emissions are required to transport the same quantity of spices.

How do I recycle SAU spice pouches?

Our spice refill pouches are 100% compostable and plastic-free, so they can be disposed of in household refuse or in a home compost bin. The composting environment can break the pouches down in 3 to 6 months.

How do I recycle SAU spice tins?

Our spice tins have been designed to be kept on your shelves for years instead of the endless supply of supermarket glass bottles. However, if you are looking to freshen things up, simply recycle them with your other household tins/ glass.

Spices

Where are your spices from?

We source our spices from diverse regions around the world, selecting locations where each spice thrives in ideal growing conditions. Every single-origin spice we offer includes detailed information about its place of cultivation and harvest date, allowing you to connect more deeply with the origins of your food.
We ensure our spices are sourced from a responsible supply chain that meets the BRC Global Standard for high quality products. SAU spices are all GM free and our spices are sourced from suppliers that meet the Ethical Trading Initiative Base Code.

How should I store my spices?

Once opened, we recommend transferring SAU spices from the refill pouches into an airtight container, like our custom spice tins. Keep the tins in a cool, dry location, away from direct sunlight. But if they do get some sunlight, don't worry, unlike glass jars from supermarkets, our tins will keep the spices protected.

How long do spices last in pouches?

Our 100% compostable pouches are heat sealed so maintain freshness to the Best Before End date. However, once opened, we recommend storing them in an airtight container, like our spice tins, in a cool, dry location, away from direct sunlight. This will help the spice remain fresh until you need it.

How long do spices stay fresh for?

Each SAU spice refill bag comes with a Best Before End date to indicate when the spices will be at their peak freshness. After this date, the spices remain safe to use but may lose some of their vibrant qualities. Ground spices typically maintain most of their flavour for 2-3 years, while whole spices retain most of their flavour for 3-4 years.

How do I blend or grind whole spices?

Whole spices are great to use as they are, but if you want to break them into smaller pieces or even a powder, use an electric spice grinder, a blender or a food processor. To have more control of the process, opt for a pestle and mortar and grind it by hand.

What happens if I eat too much spice?

Spices are used to flavour foods and drinks and should be consumed as part of a balanced diet. Although spices have health benefits, they should be consumed in moderation.

Tools

What are the dimensions of SAU tools?

Our Masala spoon is 8 cm x 3.5 cm and the Chipyo Tong is 30 cm long on both sides.

How do I clean my brass tools?

For daily use you can hand wash your tools. If you’re looking to help your brass regain shine, make a paste with 1 part of salt with 1/4 part of lemon juice. Apply the paste to the brass with a sponge or cloth and let it sit for 30 minutes before gently scrubbing the item with a damp sponge.

Are brass tools suitable for dishwashers?

You should not put brass in the dishwasher because the heat and detergents can damage it, hand wash only.

Will brass tools start to rust?

Our Chipyo Tong and Masala Spoon are made from Pure Brass which means they should not rust, as it doesn't contain iron, which is required to produce rust. When brass ages, it naturally darkens and may develop a patina (a green or brown film on the surface of bronze or similar metals, produced by oxidation over a long period). This is a beautiful and natural character of brass but you can follow our cleaning advice.

Can I put brass tongs on a flame?

Yes, we designed the tongs to be used on stoves or tandoors, brass is a strong metal known to melt at 898C, hotter than an oven.
